More Shots and What-nots AND Win $100 of MRM

Ok, you know how it is… I got busy at work and at home and what goes to the wayside first?  You guessed it - the blog.  I have managed to lose another 4 pounds since I last checked in.  I tried the carb-cycling thing as well - more about that in a future post, however, I will say that was one of the reasons for not posting.  With the carb-cycling, I couldn't take leftovers to work the next day, so I had to prepare all the next day's foods the night before plus dinner for that night.  Lots and lots of prep work.  But it seemed to have worked.

I'm including protein shakes in my menu lately because my work schedule is now allowing me to be home during my afternoon snack time.  I love protein shakes!!  What kind of protein powder (if any) do you use?  I use MRM Natural Whey.  This stuff is soooo tasty and not gritty either.  Oh and I was just about to order some more, so I stopped by their website to compare prices on Amazon and check this out… October is "Non-GMO Month"!  Who knew?  Anyway, if you want to stop by the website, you can enter to win $100 worth of product. That's a lot of shakes!!  Here's the link… MRM - USA Non-GMO Month Giveaway

In other news, I got shot #2 last Friday and I think I'm seeing improvement, but I can't be sure yet.  If nothing else, the pain has moved a bit and isn't as intense, so I guess that's something. I snapped this pic on the doc's wall as well.  The typical neuroma is exactly where mine is, only on the left foot instead of right.

Morton's Neuroma Foot Doc Appointment #2 - The First Shot

Injury and pain sure can take the wind out of your sail.  I'm not sure if I was overdoing the exercise or if the pain would've gotten worse anyway.  Either way, this week has been light in the exercise department.  I've even had to stop walking except when necessary.  =(

All this just in time for the podiatrist appointment today.  I was very unsure about getting a shot in the foot again.  I went through a series of cortisone-like shots back in 2008 and that's not a pain I'll soon forget.  But if this alcohol solution thing rids me of pain, I'm willing to try it.

The doc was running behind schedule today (aren't they always?).  After waiting almost an hour past my appointment time and giving me WAY too much time to contemplate the impending painful shot, the doc walks in and apologizes for running behind.  I was somewhat perturbed and responded with "what? it's only an hour".  He may or may not have appreciated that comment.  He did explain why he was delayed and it was completely understandable, so I forgave him and we moved on.  He went right to the shot.  I actually didn't feel that much pain.  Here's how it went.

Doc:  Slight pinch now… <needle inserted>

Me:  <preparing for pain but just feel the pressure>

Doc:  I'm gonna need your help finding the right spot, so tell me when it hurts

Me:  uh, ok?  so, you actually want it to hurt more?!?!?

Doc:  yep, that way there's an even better chance that this'll work.  So, here?  <as he starts moving the needle around in my foot>

Me:  uhhhh…

Doc:  it'll hurt like hell - how about here?  <moves the needle a few millimeters>

Me:  ow, hurts a little - not like hell though

Doc:  ok, now?  <moves needle a few more millimeters>

Me:  OW!

Doc:  Got it.

I guess you could say it felt like someone stuck a needle in my foot, but… well… he did.  He started slowly pushing the plunger of the needle.  Then he stopped.  Waited a couple seconds.  Tapped the plunger a bit more - I mean like he was barely pushing it.  I felt an ever-so-slight pressure in my foot, but nothing extreme.  And then he pulled the needle out and we're done.

Wow.  I'm so shocked!  I'll definitely go back for the whole series.  It was nothing like the cortisone shots at all.  Oh my gosh I'm so relieved.  I hope this works now - 86% chance.  If you want to see some pictures of this stuff, just do an image search of "morton's neuroma" and you'll get more than you bargained for - I just did.

But here are the ones I took today…

DietBet Progress check

I am currently participating in two DietBet challenges.  These are a lot of fun!  Support and motivation 24-7.  I can read comments from people who struggle with the same stuff I do and folks who push through the crap and just do it, and those who encourage and inspire.  Awesome stuff!

dietbet www.dietbetter.com
"Get Pumped and Lose Big with Bruce" $64, 560 in the pot with 2,152 players and 6,102 pounds lost so far.  My personal progress graph has me at 56% of my goal.  This DietBet ends on Oct 1st.

"Lose Weight, Win Money with Fitness Magazine!" $86,730 in the pot with 2,891 players and 4,463 pounds lost so far.  My personal progress graph has me at 26% of goal.  This DietBet ends on Oct 7th.

Had to work late today, so I was able to go in a bit later.  The plan was to get up at my normal time and workout.  Uh… yeah, that didn't happen.  My bed was way too comfortable - I don't know why I kid myself into thinking I'll get up early if I don't have to - it's just not gonna happen.

Going in late though, messes with my food schedule.  I don't really follow a strict schedule per se, more like a habit - arrive at work, do this, check that and work on this real quick and then eat.  So if I shift my hours, I arrive at work, do this, check that, that over there, get caught up on this other thing and before I know it, it's 9am!  I'm not a happy person at that point.  Anyway, that's what happened again today.  I got most of the plan accomplished though!

Started checking out Carb-Cycling again.  I haven't committed completely to doing it yet - just checking it out again since so many folks on the DietBet are talking about it.  Bruce lost all his weight using Chris Powell's Carb Cycling Plan.  And in case you haven't seen it yet - Extreme Makeover Weightloss edition is on Hulu (free) and also on ABC's website <<<<Click here to see Bruce's weight loss journey - he rocks!  In the past, I've found the carb-cycling to be a bit confusing, plus I've always avoided "low carb" programs because I LOVE CARBS!!!!  So, after reading more on it, I'm working on a menu for next week to see if I can do it.  I'll share as soon as it's complete and I have a better grasp on the whole thing.

'Til then, I'm off to catch up with my pillow in dreamland. G'Nite!

Turtle Krawl / Weigh-in / The plan

Turtle Krawl 2014 was awesome!  The weather was gorgeous and there were about 2500 people participating.  I finished in just under an hour and walked the whole thing.  My foot was hurting way too much to try to run.  (I'm hoping after the foot doc finishes treating me, I'll be able to start jogging more.)  My son did the 5K too and he came in at just over a half hour.

Foot Doc Appointment Results

Tomorrow is the TurtleKrawl 5K!!!  Woot!

Today, I had a couple doc appointments.  The first was for my foot.  I've been having a problem with it for a few months now, so I wanted to get it checked out and not do any permanent damage with all the working out I'm doing.  The second was a follow-up on blood work for cholesterol.

After messing around with my foot for a bit, the foot doc did an ultrasound and immediately pinpointed a neuroma.  Apparently they typically treat this with some alcohol-mixed injections - these (non-cortizone) injections have about an 86% success rate.  Yay!  More needles poked into my foot.  Can't wait <sigh>.

With all the doctor's poking and prodding my foot, I've had a tough time walking the rest of the day.  So, in order to preserve my foot for tomorrow's 5K, I chucked the workout plan and opted for a rest day today instead of Sunday.  Hopefully taking it easy today will payoff tomorrow.  I feel like a dope now though after pushing through to workout yesterday and making a big deal out of it.  Ah well, on to the next!

I was curious about "neuroma" and a quick web search.  Wow!  I had every one of the listed symptoms:

  • Pain (sharp, stabbing, throbbing, shooting)
  • Numbness
  • Tingling or "pins & needles"
  • Burning
  • Cramping
  • A feeling that you are stepping on something or that something is in your shoe

That last one really bugs me.  That happens all the time.  The numb feeling is all the time too.  The pain and burning come about 20 minutes after I start walking.  I'm really ready for it to be over.

Ok, moving on to the next doc… The bad news in my cholesterol is elevated (272).  Anything over 200 is bad.  The good news is that it's down from 6 months ago.  And 6 months ago, it was down from the test before that.  There are of course, more numbers involved than that - HDL, LDL, triglycerides, etc.  All of mine are headed in the right direction.  So the exercise and healthier eating habits are working.  The doc says no meds at this point since the numbers are consistently going the right way.  I'll follow up again in 3 months.

Finally, after my doc appointments, I stopped by and picked up our race packets for the Turtle Krawl.  Check out the shirt…  It's very light weight and cool.

Do it anyway

Have you had one (or several) of those days where you just don't feel like doing anything?  Much less a workout?  Today was one of those days for me.

There was a lot to do at work, but unfortunately most of it involved me sitting at my computer typing away the day and realizing I haven't moved in 4 hours.  Water intake was down, I didn't get to walk at all - uggghhh!  That sort of thing leads to me just not wanting to do ANYTHING when I get home.

Today was no different.  I got home from work - ready for dinner as usual.  BUT - if I'm doing Insanity, I've learned I absolutely MUST do it before eating.  I didn't want to.   It pushes me.  I was hungry.  It's difficult.

I did it anyway.

I'm so glad I did.  I know it's only Day 4 and I'm not telling you this so I can say "Look at what I did" or "I'm so awesome because I sucked it up and worked out."  No, this is HUGE.  It would've been so easy to just plop down in front of the TV after a day like today and skip it.  Excuses pop into my head about how I could give myself today off and work harder tomorrow.  And sure I could, but that excuse will inevitably lead to another, and then another, until another year goes by and I still haven't met my goal.  This is it.  On a day like today, this is when we can choose a different path.  I already know what the path of excuses holds.  Now I'm gonna check out the path of just do it anyway.

Insanity is Insane - but I like it!

With all the working out, I have almost no time to do anything else.  I'm wiped out at the end of the day, but I'm feeling good and stronger at the same time.  Does that make any sense?  So with that, I'm just gonna post the F&F and say goodnight!

Oh but first I have to mention that Insanity is awesome!!!  It's been awhile since I've been able to get my heart rate up where it needs to be to get a good aerobic workout and this does it!

Fitness Magazine DietBet Challenge Day 1

Today begins my other DietBet Challenge.  (It's not too late to start!  Just click HERE)

My official weigh-in & post Universal mini-vacation weight is >>>> 2.6 pounds down!  YAY!! I lost weight AT AN AMUSEMENT PARK?!??!  Can you believe it?  That's just crazy.  But I'm very happy about it.  SCORE!

So, yesterday was day one of Insanity - the fit test.  I cannot believe a fit test kicked my butt like that!  I did learn a valuable lesson though - one hour is NOT a sufficient amount of time to wait after dinner before doing Insanity.  I had to stop most of the exercises short so I wouldn't lose my dinner.  Tonight, I'll be doing it BEFORE dinner!  Oh and it's a good idea to turn off the ceiling fan as well - just saying' ouch!

There I was leaving work today and for some reason I start wondering when the Turtle Krawl 5K is this month.  Uh, it's THIS coming Saturday!  YIKES!!  After doing 15+ miles this weekend, I'm thinking a 5K will be very nice.  I might even try to run a little here and there.  I'll fill you all in on how it goes next week.

And here's how it all turned out today...

FITNESS
Walked 30 minutes (9376 steps total today)

The Universe has been Rocked!

We had a great time Rockin' the Universe this weekend.  We saw some amazing bands and I got in lots of steps.  Total steps were Friday – 18,127 (7.02 miles), Saturday – 17,043 (6.52 miles) and Sunday 10,015 (3.83 miles).  That’s over 15 miles of walking!!   How was the nutrition you might ask?  Well, my food choices weren't always stellar, but I didn't eat near what I normally would at an amusement park.

Newsboys
Third Day

Family Force 5

TobyMac

Me and the HE

Gringotts and the Dragon

Hogwarts Castle

The park was pretty sweet and the new Harry Potter rides were lots of fun.  I must say technology has done a lot for the amusement park industry because the new 3D motion ride/roller coasters were outstanding!  Of course, I love a good ol' fashion roller coaster too!!  I thought it was kinda cool to ride the Hogwarts Express - "Anything from the trolley dears?"  Awesome.  One of the rides kept breaking down and we weren't sure we'd be able to go on it before we left, but eventually it worked out.  Lots of fun walking through Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade - tried my first Butterbeer (liquid crack is all I can say).  I also enjoyed revisiting the attractions that were there last time I went 10 years ago - Spiderman, Transformers, Twister, etc.  I'm looking forward to going again sometime in the fall when it's not so hot.

But now we're back to reality and today went pretty well considering I was gone all weekend.  This means I didn’t shop until tonight, which meant dinner out.  I also had lunch from Subway today.  That wasn’t planned, but the microwave at work broke, so had to think fast.  I’m hoping all the working out today offset the unplanned calories.  Speaking of calories, here is the menu plan for the week…

Breakfast Choices:
Honey Nut Cheerios w/fruit & 2% milk
OR
Chobani Greek Yogurt w/mini dark choc chips & almond slivers

Lunch Choices:

Snack Choices:

I'm off to Rock the Universe!

Heading to the land of theme parks this weekend to Rock the Universe at Universal Studios.  I have no idea how to eat well at these places as I can't really plan much other than water and snacks.  I won't know what food choices I have until it's time to eat.  I've scoped out a few of the more healthy choices, but who knows if we'll be close to it when we're hungry?

One things is for sure, I'll probably get a bunch of steps in!

Anyway, I'm just stopping by to say I won't be stopping by for a few days, but I'll be back soon to tell ya all about it!!

2-Week Workout plan & Additional DietBet

First off - the good news - I lost 2 pounds!!!  YAY!

I'm also considering and most likely will join an additional Diet Bet that starts 3 Sep.  It's hosted by Bruce Pitcher, who lost an AMAZING amount of weight on Extreme Makeover Weightloss Edition.  The pot is almost $30,000 right now, so I'm looking forward to it.  Besides, there's only a week overlap between the two challenges, so it'll keep me on my toes.  Hey and everyone is invited!!  So, what are you waiting for?!?!?  Check it out… Get Pumped and Lose Big with Bruce

Today, I drew up a two week plan for workouts.  I haven't really been planning those lately, instead, I've just focused on getting in at least 30 minutes of walking or some type of cardio.  With the Diet Bet challenge approaching, I figured I need a plan.  So… here it is.

What do you think?  Too ambitious?  Too lax?  Well, I'm hoping it's just right.

But of course, as SOON as I finish making this plan and stand back to admire my work, here comes the monkey wrench.  What this plan doesn't show is 'when' I was planning on doing all that stuff.  It was supposed to be scattered throughout the day, and on Tuesday mornings, I usually can go to work late and get the workout in early, but I just found out I have to go in to work early tomorrow - Uggh!  Well, looks like I'll be scheduling it later in the day - 12-hr shifts just don't leave much time to work with, ya know?  Anyway, I won't let that derail me though.  I'll just press on and do the best I can with what I have.

What do I have though is this plan all laid out in a not-so-fancy Excel spreadsheet so it looks more like a calendar - I just can't get the formatting with this blog tool.  But, hey, if you'd like a copy in excel - completely editable for your own workout plans, just leave a comment or email and I'll hook you up.

That brings me to today…

FITNESS
walked 30 minutes

squat challenge day 7

FOOD
Breakfast:
Honey Nut Cheerios w/2% milk plus fresh blackberries

Lunch:
Lean Cuisine Orange Chicken

Dinner:
Wendy's burger, fries & tea with a leftover b-day cupcake and a couple tablespoons of ice cream.  (womp womp whooommp)

Snacks:
Handful of Planters peanuts
Quaker's Chewy Granola bar

Not to worry though!! We are almost out of b-day cupcakes!  Did I mention it's also my daughter's b-day (the big 18!).  We bought 4 vanilla and 4 chocolate cupcakes to avoid the extreme cake leftovers. Only three left and I'm hoping the kids will polish them off while I'm at work tomorrow.  With all the birthdays this weekend, neither grocery shopping and nor meal planning happened.  Sooooo, guess what I'm doing after work tomorrow (after my work out of course)?

Finally, here's a pic from this Saturday at the beach.  It was a bit overcast, so we just walked for about 30 minutes…

Have a great week!
